How to Host a Blue Lotus Ceremony with Friends

How to Host a Blue Lotus Ceremony with Friends

A tea ceremony doesn't have to be a solitary thing. Some of the most beautiful blue lotus rituals happen around a table with people you love: a slow pot of tea, a candle, and the rare luxury of an evening with nowhere else to be. Here is how to host your own.

What you'll need

  • Blue lotus: Euphoria Blend for an easy loose-leaf pot, or whole flowers if you'd like guests to watch them open
  • A glass teapot or a large pot with a strainer
  • A cup for each guest
  • A candle, and something from nature for the centre of the table
  • Paper and pens, or a journal for each guest

Set the space

Choose a quiet corner and dim the lights. Clear away phones. Place the candle and teapot in the centre so everyone is gathered around the same point. Soft music, or none at all.

Brew for the group

Allow about 1 tablespoon of loose leaf per cup (200ml), or 1 to 2 whole flowers per cup. Heat the water to about 80°C, just off the boil. Steep 3 to 5 minutes for loose leaf, or 5 to 10 minutes for whole flowers. Our step-by-step brewing guide has the detail.

The flow of the evening

  1. Arrive and settle. Give everyone a moment to land. Light the candle together.
  2. Set an intention. Invite each person to write down one thing they'd like to bring into the coming weeks.
  3. Pour in silence. Let the host pour for each guest, slowly, without talking. Notice the colour and the aroma.
  4. Sip and share. Go around the circle. Each person shares as much or as little as they like. Everyone else simply listens.
  5. Reflect. A few quiet minutes to write: what came up, what you're grateful for.
  6. Close with gratitude. Blow out the candle together.

Follow the moon

A new moon is a natural time for setting intentions; a full moon for reflection and gratitude. Many of our customers gather on these nights. Read more in Blue lotus and the full moon.

Before you begin

As with any botanical, guests who are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication should check with their doctor first. Our notes on who should avoid blue lotus are worth sharing with your circle.

Let us host it for you

If you'd love a ceremony without the preparation, Mallika hosts blue lotus tea ceremonies for private events, retreats and one-on-one sessions: $350 for up to 10 people, then $30 per person. See Events and offerings.
